Background of the Study
Peace education is an essential tool for promoting understanding, tolerance, and coexistence among different groups within a society. It involves teaching individuals and communities about conflict resolution, non-violent communication, and the importance of social harmony. In Nigeria, where ethnic, religious, and political tensions often lead to violence, peace education has become a critical part of conflict prevention strategies. Doma LGA in Nasarawa State has experienced its share of communal conflicts, which have disrupted the peace and stability of the area.

Peace education programs in Doma have been introduced at various levels, from schools to community-based initiatives, with the goal of teaching people how to resolve differences peacefully and foster mutual respect. The effectiveness of these programs in preventing conflicts and promoting long-term peace is the subject of this study. This research aims to assess the role of peace education in conflict prevention in Doma LGA and to explore how it contributes to building a culture of peace.

Statement of the Problem
Despite the implementation of peace education programs in various parts of Nigeria, many regions, including Doma, continue to experience periodic outbreaks of violence and conflict. This raises concerns about the effectiveness of peace education in preventing conflict and promoting social cohesion. While some programs have shown success in raising awareness and improving attitudes towards peace, others have been less impactful due to challenges such as inadequate training, limited resources, and lack of sustained engagement with local communities. This study will assess the impact of peace education as a tool for conflict prevention in Doma LGA.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the role of peace education in conflict prevention in Doma LGA.

  2. To assess the impact of peace education programs on the attitudes and behaviors of individuals towards conflict resolution.

  3. To identify the challenges and opportunities for improving peace education initiatives in Doma LGA.

Research Questions

  1. How has peace education contributed to conflict prevention in Doma LGA?

  2. What impact has peace education had on the attitudes and behaviors of community members regarding conflict resolution?

  3. What challenges and opportunities exist for improving peace education in Doma LGA?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Peace education programs have significantly contributed to reducing the incidence of conflict in Doma LGA.

  2. There is a positive correlation between peace education and improved attitudes towards non-violent conflict resolution in Doma LGA.

  3. The effectiveness of peace education programs is influenced by the level of community involvement and support.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on peace education programs in Doma LGA, Nasarawa State, between 2010 and 2025. Data will be collected through interviews, surveys, and content analysis of educational materials. Limitations include potential biases in self-reported data and challenges in assessing long-term changes in community attitudes.
